Harley Quinn turns 27 years old today. She first appeared in season 1, episode 22 of Batman: The Animated Series entitled “Joker’s Favor” that aired September 11th, 1992. The character was not meant to be long lasting, but has become a staple of the Batman and DC universes through comics, television, and movies. In honor of the “purveyor of puddin’,” we’ve decided to give you 7 things you absolutely need to know about one of the most unique and eccentric female characters in the DC universe.

1. She was a psychiatrist treating The Joker

For those unfamiliar with Harley’s origin story, she was a psychiatrist employed by Arkham Asylum to evaluate The Joker. The creators of Batman: The Animated Series wrote a comic detailing her origin. The book won an Eisner award and was later adapted for their The New Batman Adventures series.

2. The character was based on another character by Arleen Sorkin

The first actress to voice Harley Quinn was Arleen Sorkin. Sorkin was an accomplished actress who, years earlier, had worked on the soap opera Days of Our Lives. During one episode, Sorkin’s character is involved in a dream sequence where she dresses up as a harlequin, the classic jester like comedic character. Sorkin was friends with producer Paul Dini in college, and when the idea for a female sidekick for the Joker came up, they thought of her. The character from Days of Our Lives was a big inspiration for Harley Quinn’s mannerisms.

3. Her current comic book look is very similar to Margot Robbie in Suicide Squad

Long gone are the days of harlequin outfits and makeup. The comic book character sports very short shorts, a ripped t-shirt, a jacket, fishnet stockings, and blonde hair with the tips dyed blue and pink respectively. The look was obviously inspired by the 2016 film Suicide Squad.

4. There’s a new Harley Quinn Animated show coming to the DC Universe app

There will be a new Harley Quinn animated show released on the DC Universe app very soon. The release date is currently set for October. Harley is set to be voiced by Big Bang Theory alum Kaley Cuoco.

5. 15 voices for one iconic character

Over the years Harley Quinn has been voiced by 15 seperate women across a large number of animated shows, movies, and video games. Notable actresses include Jenny Slate in the Lego Batman movie, Tara Strong in the Arkham Series of video games, and the voice most associated with the character, Arleen Sorkin from Batman: The Animated Series.

6. Margot Robbie will reprise the role in 2020

There is a follow up film to Suicide Squad set to be released in 2020. It’s titled Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). Other female heroes slated for the film include Black Canary and Huntress.

7. Look at all these roles!

Since the character debuted 27 years ago, Harley Quinn has gone on to be featured in comic books, television, other animated works, movies, video games, and more. Harley Quinn has become one of the most iconic comic characters in history and she didn’t even come from a comic book! A sampling of the works to feature Harley Quinn are below

1 feature length film with a box office totalling $746 million

2 feature length films in various states of development

3 appearances on live action television shows

10+ video games

25+ animated television shows and movies
